Cultivating Global Change from the Classroom Up: The Vision of Dr. Ian Humphreys
When we talk about combating the global environmental crisis, conversations often default to high-level policy, green technology, or international treaties. While these are vital, they overlook the most powerful catalyst for long-term sustainability: our youth. To truly shift the planet's trajectory, we must embed ecological literacy into how the next generation learns, lives, and leads.
Few understand this better than Dr. Ian Humphreys. With a career spanning over three decades in the environmental NGO sector, he has been a driving force in redefining what it means to educate for a sustainable future.

Dr. Ian Humphreys
With over 30 years of leadership in the environmental NGO sector, Dr. Ian Humphreys is a driving force behind global environmental education. As Chief Executive of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful (KNIB), he achieved a monumental milestone: ensuring all schools in Northern Ireland were registered with the international Eco-Schools program.
Believing real change requires systemic collaboration, Dr. Humphreys partnered with government departments to embed essential climate and outdoor education into the national curriculum. He is also a passionate advocate for youth leadership, having established the "30 Under 30 Climate Change Makers" program, a regional sister initiative to NAAEE’s highly successful EE 30 Under 30 program.
Today, his impact extends globally. Alongside his ongoing conservation work at Buglife, Dr. Humphreys serves as the Vice President for the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and sits on the Advisory Group for the Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP), where he helps steer the UN’s Greening Education Partnership targets worldwide.
(Fun Fact: When he isn't shaping global education policy, Ian is an avid ornithologist and volunteer bird bander!)
The "Whole-School" Revolution
With a background as a Research Fellow in agricultural zoology and forestry at Queen's University Belfast, Dr. Humphreys has a deep scientific understanding of natural systems. His most profound impact has been translating that science into systemic educational action.
Having served many years as Chief Executive of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful (KNIB) and currently as Vice President for the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Dr. Humphreys focuses on a "whole-school" approach to sustainability. His work rests on several core pillars:
Championing the Eco-Schools Program: The Eco-Schools initiative is the world’s largest environmental education program, operating in dozens of countries and involving over 20 million students. Under Dr. Humphreys’ leadership, Northern Ireland achieved a world-first milestone: 100% of all schools registered as Eco-Schools. This initiative transforms campuses into living laboratories where students manage waste, conserve energy, and improve local biodiversity.
Tackling Plastic at the Source: Through initiatives like the "Tackling Plastic NI" campaign, Dr. Humphreys emphasizes that plastic itself isn't the enemy—our single-use habit is. He advocates educational programs that push schools and local businesses to transition toward a circular economy, encouraging students to audit their school's waste and design reduction strategies.
Driving Systemic Curriculum Change: Dr. Humphreys recognized early that extracurricular eco-clubs are not enough. He works directly with government departments such as the Department of Education to mandate climate and outdoor education training for teachers. By strengthening climate education within the national curriculum, he ensures sustainability is treated as a core subject, not an afterthought.
Why It Matters: Preparing for a Three-Pronged Emergency
Dr. Humphreys frequently notes that we face a "three-pronged global emergency" comprising climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The importance of his work lies in addressing all three simultaneously through the lens of youth empowerment.
When a school adopts the Eco-Schools framework, the benefits ripple outward. A campus that eliminates single-use plastics reduces pollution. A school that plants native gardens to support local pollinators combats biodiversity loss. When students learn to calculate and reduce their campus's carbon footprint, they engage in direct climate action.
More importantly, this educational model combats rising "climate anxiety" among youth. By giving students tangible control over their local environment, education shifts from a narrative of global doom to one of actionable, localized hope. They do not just learn about problems; they are given the mandate and tools to become immediate problem-solvers.
Forging Global Alliances: The GEEP and NAAEE Connection
Dr. Humphreys' influence is not confined to Europe; he is a massive proponent of international collaboration. His belief that "only by working together can real change be achieved" has led to profound, direct connections with both the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) and the Global Environmental Education Partnership (GEEP).
The GEEP Advisory Group and the APRC: Dr. Humphreys sits on the Advisory Group for GEEP, shaping global environmental education strategies alongside international leaders. He has actively collaborated with Taiwanese officials and the GEEP Asia-Pacific Regional Center (APRC). In 2023, he even helped host a major global GEEP advisory meeting in Belfast, uniting representatives from Taiwan's Ministry of Environment, NAAEE, and global experts to discuss expanding the GEEP network.
The "30 Under 30" Pipeline: In one of the most direct partnerships with North America, Dr. Humphreys established the "30 Under 30 Climate Change Makers" program in Northern Ireland. This initiative was explicitly designed as a regional sister program to the highly successful NAAEE EE 30 Under 30 program. Young environmental leaders trained under Dr. Humphreys’ local program gain direct connections to the parent NAAEE network in North America, allowing youth to share green innovations—from sustainable tourism to circular waste models—across the Atlantic.
Aligning with the UN Greening Education Partnership: Through his role at FEE and his collaborations with GEEP, Dr. Humphreys works to ensure that all regional efforts align with the UN’s broader targets. Whether he is discussing the ethical integration of Artificial Intelligence in environmental education on a GEEP webinar or pushing for policy changes, he serves as a vital bridge connecting local school actions to massive, global educational frameworks.
