Cancellation of the 13th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC 2026)
The World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) officially announced today that the 13th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC 2026), originally scheduled for September 21 to 25, 2026, in Perth, Australia, has been canceled after careful evaluation.
Mission and Vision
WEEC is the most scalable and influential biennial event in global environmental education, dedicated to connecting researchers, educators, governments, and the corporate sector to solve global environmental crises through transnational dialogue and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). This congress originally aimed to integrate Australian Indigenous wisdom with modern science to strengthen environmental actions between Oceania and the globe.
Reasons for Cancellation
The Local Organizing Committee stated that canceling this long-prepared event was a difficult decision, based on the following realistic factors:
1. Surge in International Situations and Operating Costs: Ongoing geopolitical uncertainties, along with significant increases in global travel and fuel costs, have severely impacted on the feasibility of holding large-scale transnational conferences.
2. Financial Sustainability Risks: Despite enthusiastic external inquiries, the number of registered participants did not reach the expected threshold, making it impossible to guarantee the conference's operational quality and difficult to maintain the organizers' financial balance and long-term operation.
Outlook
The Organizing Committee deeply regrets this change and extends its apologies to the submitters, sponsors, and supporters who have invested in preparatory work. Although the 2026 Perth Congress cannot be held as scheduled, WEEC's mission to promote global environmental education continues; future will be re-evaluated, and more sustainable ways to continue global environmental dialogues will be sought.
